Louis van Gaal reckons Champions League spot can save his Manchester United career

LOUIS VAN GAAL believes he will keep his Manchester United job if they finish in the top four.

Jose Mourinho wants to land the Old Trafford post in the summer.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward even failed to mention LVG in a conference call with major investors yesterday.

Yet the Dutchman, whose team are six points off rivals Manchester City in fourth spot, expects to remain if he again delivers Champions League football next term.

He heads to Sunderland tomorrow under huge pressure with former Chelsea chief Mourinho hopeful of being offered a three-year deal to take over. Connections of Spurs’ Mauricio Pochettino have also been sounded out.

SunSport revealed yesterday United’s squad is split over Mourinho.

Players are worried whether popular assistant boss Ryan Giggs will fit into the Special One’s structure, while the likes of Juan Mata, who was sold by Mourinho, fears he could be moved on again.

Yet Van Gaal, although now admitting he is under massive pressure to keep his job, has told friends in the game he could be given the opportunity to remain.

That would mean results have to improve and they must secure another lucrative place in Europe’s top competition.

David Moyes was sacked in 2014 when his hopes of finishing in the top four were ended by defeat at ex-club Everton.

United failed to qualify for the Champions League last 16 and face FC Midtjylland in the Europa League on Thursday.
